Experts reveal why we are obsessed with holiday scents

From looking forward to purchasing a new holiday fragrance at the airport to the nostalgia it creates whilst making precious memories, why are so many of us often in search of the perfect holiday fragrance or that unique ‘holiday in a bottle’ scent. We asked perfumers and creators, Jean-Christophe HERAULT of Contes des Parfums Sevilla fragrance and Claudio Denz of Maison Noir why we love them and what to look for in the perfect summer fragrance...
What is so special about a holiday scent?
Claudio Denz explains, “Holidays are a great opportunity to try something new. Holiday fragrances often carry the essence and ambiance of a season or destination” while Jean-Christophe Herault reminds us how often, “A holiday scent is a scent brimming with joy and happiness!”
What things should you consider when picking a scent for your vacation?
JCH: “A holiday scent becomes a time capsule of your best moments, so carefully select one that captures the essence of your travel experience. Personally, for sunny days, I would opt for something fresh, sparkling, and light. An Eau de Cologne for example. When the sun sets and you’re getting ready for a night out, I’d recommend choosing a more sophisticated and rich perfume, with an unforgettable sillage.”
CD: “Consider the climate and season at your destination and the activities you are planning. Try to imagine how your fragrance might mingle with the smell of this place. Some might say you should wear a light or heavy fragrance depending on the season, place and weather, but I think you should just go with the fragrance that feels right.”
What notes are important for a summer scent?
JCH: “A summer fragrance is a scent that invites us to savor life to the fullest! Citrus scents, such as lemon and bergamot, are refreshing and energizing. They evoke a sense of vitality and freshness, perfect for hot days.
Floral fragrances are a classic choice for summers also, these are reminiscent of blooming gardens. As the temperature rises, aquatic notes provide a cooling effect. Think of a sea breeze, the scent of the ocean… And then there are green fragrances, inspired by leaves, grass, and herbs. These notes breathe life in our senses, evoking the great outdoors.”
CD: “People often like fresh, ozonic and fougère notes in summer. Choose citrus, fruity or ingredients like patchouli.”
What is your favorite summer scent from your collection and why?
JCH: “One of my favorite summer scents is Sevilla by Contes de Parfums. This scent is an olfactory escapade to the sun-kissed streets of Seville, especially in the springtime, where the air dances with the sweet notes of orange blossom and jasmine.”
CD: “Both, Icarus 347 and Vertigo 236 carry the number 3 in their name and hence have this ozonic note that makes them feel fresh and therefore perfectly fit the warmer climate. Vertigo 236 is for those who like strong citrus notes, whereas Icarus 347 goes more into a green, fruity direction.”
