21st November 2024: Denmark’s original spa, Kurhotel Skodsborg is delighted to launch The Nordisk Retreat – a two-days of Nordic hot / cold therapy (contrast therapy), breathwork, yoga, meditation and strength training; the perfect way to banish winter woes and bust the Blue Monday myth.
The Nordisk Retreat by Kurhotel Skodsborg x Richie Norton takes place from 23rd to 24th January 2025. The retreat is the first of its kind, bringing together – for the first time - leading lights from both the UK and Denmark to explore the transformative power of breathwork, yoga, meditation, strength training and hot and cold therapy. Giving a decidedly Danish spin to proceedings, Kurhotel Skodsborg’s hot and cold therapy takes the form of SaunaGus: an extraordinary, cathartic experience best described as an aromatherapy sauna set to music, followed by an icy dip in The Sound.
Over two days, The Nordisk Retreat will include both practical and Q&A-led working sessions and panel discussions on the latest British and Danish wellness trends and their underlying science.
Fittingly, it was here at Kurhotel Skodsborg that founder Dr Carl Ottosen first started the conversation around a preventive approach to health and wellness some 125 years ago. Originally a sanatorium founded in the late 1890s, the philosophy of Kurhotel Skodsborg was – and still is – based on the fundamental principles for a healthy life: light, air, water, nutrition, exercise and rest. The simplicity and wholesome nature of the Nordic way of life is as relevant today as it was in the 19th century and forms a key part of The Nordisk Retreat.
The Nordisk Retreat includes:
- A yoga and breathwork workshop overlooking the forest with Richie which you will learn all about the power and magic of breathwork. Richie will be sharing breathing tools you can use in everyday life to manage stress, improve sleep and boost sports performance. You will get a deep dive into breathing mechanics and key practices to help with very common breathing dysfunction. This is for all levels of ability, Richie juts asks that you come with an open mind and curious energy.
- A performance pool training workshop with Richie which teaches breath control, mental toughness, and physical conditioning through underwater exercises. Participants improve lung capacity, endurance, and body awareness while learning to stay calm under pressure. The water environment promotes strength and mobility with less joint stress, aiding in recovery. This training enhances mental resilience, cardiovascular health, and physical performance by pushing limits in a controlled, low-impact setting, helping individuals manage stress and improve overall athletic abilities. This will be a session for all levels.
- A SaunaGus workshop – Kurhotel Skodsborg’s signature wellness experience. An aromatherapy sauna in which a Gusmester uses a swirling towel or fan to infuse the air with pure essential oils giving a mild scent that - combined with the heat - enhances relaxation. Each sauna session ends with a dip in The Sound to juxtapose the extreme heat and push guests’ physical and mental limits. This 60-minute workshop allows enough time for two rounds of sauna and cold dipping in The Sound
- A Skodsborg Flow workshop – a 60-minute workshop guiding guests through the eight best hot and cold experiences in Kurhotel Skodsborg’s incredible 100m² spa. This workshop maximises each treatment so that – when practiced in sequence – their combined benefits are even more powerful and effective. The eight experiences are designed to strengthen the immune system, stimulate blood circulation and connective tissue, improve sleep and help achieve mental clarity
- Various panel and Q&A sessions bookmarking the above workshops
- A sleep-focussed talk, dinner and in-room package including eye pillow, speciality tea and podcast by in-house sleep specialist, Lisa Klint (a sneak peek of Kurhotel Skodsborg’s new Sleep Retreat)
- An opportunity to join a guided walk or run in the neighbouring UNESCO heritage nature reserve, Dyrehaven
- Full access to Kurhotel Skodsborg’s 100m² spa offering an impressive 16 different cooling and warming experiences, plus access to all fitness classes (must be booked in advance; T&Cs apply)
- An overnight stay in a standard double room
- All meals featured in the retreat itinerary including: breakfast, lunch, drinks and dinner
The Nordisk Retreat starts from £496 per person per room (/£813 per room based on two sharing a standard double room). Flights and transfers not included.
