Beach Cottage Anderby Creek, Lincolnshire

We know what you’re thinking: Skegness?! But this creek is a secret locals-only area and the fisherman’s cottage is beach-hut perfect. Perched above the dunes, its sky-blue colour makes you smile. Step inside and take in the sea views, even better from the decking and bedroom terrace.

Fritton Lake, Norfolk
A very worthy rewilding project on the Somerleyton estate, for which the owner and all the staff share huge enthusiasm. You stay in the clubhouse or one of the cabins – either a standard or deluxe. All have glass walls to the living room, built specifically to feel part of the wild countryside setting and some have lake views, but they’re cleverly designed not to overlook one another and eating outdoors will be wonderful in warm weather.
Rooms for 2 from £154 per night / Cabins from £174 per night – www.sawdays.co.uk/frittonlake
Brunton House and Cottages, Northumberland
You’re a few fields from the sandy coastline and in the middle of the Fallodon Estate. The main house is perfect for bringing family and friends: children will adore the play area in the garden, TVs in every bedroom, the piano, pool and table football in the games room; grown-ups will love having two sitting rooms and a snug, two kitchens perfectly equipped (one with an Aga), a drinks room with cocktail-making kit, and large bedrooms.

Lime Tree Hotel, London
You’ll be hard pressed to find better value in the centre of town. The Lime Tree – two elegant Georgian townhouses – stands less than a mile from Buckingham Palace, with Westminster, Sloane Square and Piccadilly all a short stroll. Add warm interiors, kind owners and a smart gastropub waiting round the corner and you’ve unearthed a London gem.

Lord Crewe Arms at Blanchland, Northumberland
Originally the abbot’s lodge and kitchens (and its garden the cloisters), the Lord Crewe Arms has become a Grade II*-listed inn. Inside: ancient flags, inglenook fireplaces, fortress walls and a classy country decor. Local lad Paul Johnson has returned from working alongside Nathan Outlaw and running his own pub in Wylam to showcase the very best of local and seasonal produce on his menus and there are several different spaces to enjoy it, including the Gatehouse, a foodie haven, and the vaulted pub.

Gite Du Perigord, Dordogne, France
Dominique makes you feel very welcome here. There’s a real community spirit and everyone has privacy and views. Opt for La Petite Borde’s open fire and little suntrap garden, the cosy nest of l’Oustal du Potager or the antique shop finds of La Métairie’s twin apartments – great for two families together. Each one is charmingly decked out in limewash and tadelakt, natural fabrics at the windows which look out on to views that are green and far ranging. You can see landmark towns but are screened by orchards – eat outside on the terrace or join the rest of the tribe at the pool.

Hôtel Windsor, Nice, France
A 1930s Riviera hotel with a pool in a palm grove and exotic birds in cages. Indoors, Hôtel Windsor has introduced the Thirties to the 21st century by asking contemporary artists to decorate some of the rooms. The result is gifts of wit, provocation, flights of fancy and minimalist sobriety: Joan Mas’s La Cage à Mouche, cosmopolitan Ben’s writing on the walls, Antoine Beaudoin’s frescoes of Venice, Egypt, India – and Tintin, all-time favourite.

Château Côte de Nacre, Normandy, France
This handsome Neoclassical house is surrounded by ancient trees and feels secluded and peaceful, although the town square is a few minutes’ walk away and the nearest restaurant, a cheap and cheerful bistro called Le Sexton, is a 15-minute walk. The modern, light-filled apartments have well-equipped kitchens stocked with the basics, and eco-conscious Sandra leaves natural, organic soaps and shampoo in the bathrooms too.

Dimora Cottanera, Sicily, Italy
Snooze on a sun lounger under a pergola, wander the beautiful gardens, dip into the whirlpool tub, or float in the pool gazing at the vineyards and the Alcantara valley – it couldn’t be lovelier. Breakfast is a feast: Provola dei Nebrodi cheese and cured meats, fruits and squeezed juice in season, homemade cakes and brioche. Suites are all spacious with a minimalist feel, private outdoor spaces (most with views towards the vineyard), Sicilian photographs on the walls and spoiling bathrooms.

Tenuta Il Cicalino, Tuscany, Italy
Jog along the running tracks; bask by the pools; saunter up to the restaurant and find a table facing the valley. Dinner here is a treat. The apartment-filled farmhouses of this vast estate, surrounded by olive groves and vines, are linked by sloping paths lit up at night, and furnished in impeccable style. If you decide to self-cater, you get your own dining terraces, and shops in Massa Marittima (3km). Come for a short stay and you can do B&B – with wonderful Tuscan breakfasts.
